Introduction

An anesthesia asssitant   or anesthesia technician is an allied healthcare worker who assists with the administration and monitoring of anaesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of anaesthesia techniques, instruments, supplies, and technology. Anaesthetic technicians are mainly employed by anaesthetic departments or operating theatre suites, but can be found in other areas of clinical practice including emergency departments, intensive care units (ICU) and day surgery clinics.

In short, operation theatre technicians have to manage and organize whole of the operation theatre without whom no surgeon can operate on the patients and neither can a hospital or a nursing home run or be complete. They are known as backbone of operation theatre and without them no surgeon can operate comfortably. This course aims to prepare technicians with specialized knowledge, skill and attitude in basics of operation theatre techniques.

Eligibility

Male/Female candidates who have passed XII class (H.S.S.E)/ N.O.S. With science stream, are eligible. Candidates studying / discontinued 10 + 2+3 / Intermediate / equivalent are also eligible.

Age limit

Students should not be more than 35 years of age as on 1st JANUARY of year of admission.

Course programme

  • Duration of course is 02 years (24 Months)
  • Which includes 12 months-Class room study and internal practical during first year.

The second year includes class room study, internal lab practical and hospital trainings including field/community medical tours in the adjacent and far-flung areas.

  • H. S.S.E (XII class) Marks Memo
  • Transfer Certificate
  • Migration Certificate
  • Date of birth proof certificate
  • Caste certificate( for S.T, S.C & B.C. C students)
  • Income certificate

Documents to be attached with the admission form:

  • 07 xerox copies of each of the following testimonials
  • 10 +2 marks sheet , Date of Birth certificate , state subject ,caste certificate if any , income certificate.
  • Three self addressed postal envelopes worth ten rupees stamp affixed.
  • Ten latest passport size photographs ,dully paste two on admission form & eight to be pinned with the form.

Fee Structure

  • First Installment: Rs 25,000/ (At the time of Admission.)
  • Second Installment: Rs 20,000/ 
  • Third installment: Rs 15,000/ 
  • Fourth installment: Rs 15,000/ 
  • Clinic Charges: Rs 5000/
  • Total Rs 80,000 /

Note:The delay in the payments should be charged by the late fee of 10% of the balance of that time if exceeded by one week and after that a stern action should be taken as per the norms of the college which may even expel the student from the on rolls.

Job description

Anaesthetic technicians are involved with all aspects of the delivery of a patient's perioperative anaesthetic care[1], taking into account the patients' religious and cultural beliefs and respecting their right to medical privacy and dignity at all times.

Prior to anaesthesia

Anaesthetic technicians prepare equipment needed for the patient to safely undergo anaesthesia. This involves: checking and setting up the anaesthetic machine

  • Preparing intravenous drugs
  • Preparing intravenous therapy administration equipment
  • preparing a range of devices to maintain the patient's airway (e.g. laryngeal masks, endotracheal tube)
  • Communicating with the patient when they arrive into the operating theatre, verifying the pre-operative checklist for allergies, informed consent and past medical history.
  • Establish peripheral intravenous access.
  • Applying anaesthetic monitoring to help assess the patients' condition whilst under anaesthesia. This may include electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation devices. The monitoring of other parameters such as anaesthesia depth monitors (EEG, bispectral index etc.) may also be necessary.

During anaesthesia

The anaesthetic technicians role includes assisting with:

  • Inducing and maintaining adequate anaesthesia.
  • Establishing and securing an airway.
  • Making sure that patients are positioned in such a way NOT to cause discomfort or injury during their procedure.
  • Monitoring patients' vital signs and anaesthesia depth.
  • Temperature monitoring and regulation.
  • Collection and analysis of patient (blood) samples.
  • Acquiring transfusion fluids and equipment.

After anaesthesia

Anaesthetic technicians assist the anaesthetist with:

  • Waking the patient.
  • Removing airway devices.
  • Transferring the patient to the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Handing over patient information to the PACU staff.
